What Is A Computer Hard Drive?

A computer hard drive is the main storage device, other names for this hardware are, a hard disk drive and HD or HDD. Nearly every computer or server contains one or more hard-disk drives. Mainframes and supercomputers are connected to hundreds of hard drives.

Hard drives have one basic function, they permanently store digital information. The information, once entered, will be saved even when the power goes out. The hard drive is located in the front of the computer, and is located an air sealed casing.

Many disk drives improve performance through caching, this is the saving of new information you have viewed on the internet. This is stored in your temporary internet files. When you return to a site that is stored in your cache the computer is able to move to the site much quicker because it already has the information. You will need to delete these temporary internet files from time to time, as they can cause your computer to bog down and move slower.

The two most common standards for passing data between hard disk and computer, are IDE and SCSI. Sometimes hard disk drives are called Winchester drives. Winchester is the name of one of the first popular disk drive technology introduced by IBM in 1973.

Normally a desktop computers hard disk will have a capacity of 10 to 40 gigabytes. Data is stored on the hard drive in the form of files, and a file is a named collection of information bytes. The bytes can be the instructions on a software application for the computer to run, the records of a database, or the pixel colors for a GIF image. When a program requests a file, the hard disk retrieves the files bytes and sends them to the CPU, one at a time.

The two ways to measure the performance of a computer hard disk are: data rate, which is the number of bytes per second the drive can deliver to the CPU. Rates usually fall between 5 and 40 megabytes per second, and seek time, which is the amount of time between when the file is requested and the time the first byte is sent. Times between 10 and 20 milliseconds are common. Another important feature is the storage capacity of the drive, which is the number of bytes the computer hard drive will hold.

Data is stored on the surface of a platter in tracks and sectors. Sectors are pie shaped wedges on a track, and tracks are concentric circles. Formatting a computer hard drive is establishing the tracks and sectors on the platter. The beginning and ending points of each sector are written on the platter. This will prepare the computer hard drive to hold bytes of information. There are one or more platters on a hard drive and they store data. The platters are coated with a magnetic material, somewhat similar to what video tapes and floppy disks are made of. The grain of the magnetic material determines the density of the data that can be written to or read from the platter.

The recording heads of the hard drive can quickly create a magnetic field that magnetizes the small particles on the platter. The head is able to rapidly find the magnetic polarity of the small magnetic particles as they move under the heads on the spinning disk.
